secret’s in the sauce…

spaghetti sauce is like gold in my hubs’ family. no, they’re not italian, but they have a love for really good italian food. his family spaghetti sauce is a secret. a secret passed to them from their very dear italian friends. (i’m thinking my mother-in-law probably promised her unborn grandchildren as a wager should she ever spill the secret to anyone outside of the family). it’s so much a secret that i had to be married for one year before i was ever trusted with the recipe.

well, this september will mark 5 years of blissful marriage, i’ve had the recipe for 4 of those years, and i’ve never made it. i’m the type of girl that likes to get in and out of the kitchen, not spend 10 hours of my day stirring sauce every 30 minutes! come now…that doesn’t sound like fun to me. but, now that i’m a work-from-home kind of girl again, i kinda have the luxury to spend 10 hours making such culinary creations. so with the encouragement from my hubs (and promise that he would be sous chef), i unpacked the handwritten recipe from the secret stash in my recipe box and made the grocery list. (we did score a date at the dekalb farmers market for authentic italian ingredients).

i we survived. the 10 hours paid off. it was very delicious and we have 15 quarts in our freezer that will last us (hopefully) the rest of the year. so, if i only have to sacrifice 10 hours once a year, i guess it would be worth it. maybe i’ll get lucky and the “mil” will make her batch and then we’ll be good for at least a year and a half!

enjoy the pictures, because that’s all i’m allowed to share. i’d really hate to give away my unborn children.

so i arrived safely in nigeria. things i’ve learned or experienced thus far:

*driving here is crazy—there are no lines on the road and there’s no speed limit. it’s a free for all. *the food i’ve eaten thus far is very americanized. *they don’t know how to dougie…but do know the song! *desperate housewives is a popular tv show. *power goes out all too often around here. *the temperature is cooler here than when i left atl. *salad dressing is called “salad cream”. *the people i’ve met thus far have been so nice!

i’m sure there will be much more that i learn while i’m here. stay tuned.

wheels up…

…to nigeria! that’s right: getting ready to make my first overseas trip to nigeria! i’m very excited, especially to know it will be cooler there than it is in the atl!
